You’re getting married!? Congrats! You’re about to spend the rest of your life with the man/woman of your dreams!! You’re also about to get a ton of gifts!!
If you decide that registering for gifts is right for you, read on for some helpful hints!
1. Start by choosing your retailers. Choose two or even three stores to register with. This gives your family & friends many options and many gifts to choose from! Also, different stores will have different shipping policies as well as seasonal sales that your guests can look out for!
I recommend that one of your store choices be Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Put your kitchen appliances, knives, pots & pans on your list here. This is why:
- The 20% off coupons. If you don’t already get these in the mail, you can sign up for store e-mails which include the online coupons here. This makes it much easier for your wedding guests to buy you bigger ticket items.
- Free shipping for orders over $49. Further, they have a ton of site-to-store options as well as many locations across the country. Odds are that no matter where your wedding guests live, they are near a BB&B.
- They gift wrap!
- They have a great no-hassle return policy which makes returns and exchanges very easy if you misplace a gift receipt or packing slip!

I recommend that you choose another store like Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn as well. These stores have a lot more to choose from when it comes to unique and decorative items. Some people round out their lists with a large department store like Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s.

2. Look online and in store. I suggest you start in store and walk around with the little scanner gun thing. First, it’s just a fun activity for the two of you. Also, it gives you a chance to see the items in person and visualize sizes, colors, and textures, and how it will go with the decor you already have. After the fact, create online accounts with the retailers and link your account to your registry. Most retailers have a much larger online selection than they do in store, so you may find more items online!
3. Register for items that you will seriously use! Don’t kid yourself–will you really use that fancy fondue set? When it comes down to it, make sure you have practical items on your list first! Examples: need–a blender; wants–a wine cooler. This is your time to get the items you need–and then fill in with the items that you want.
Also, do you really need 12 place settings of that designer China? 12 place settings at over $120 a piece will take up a lot of room on your registry.
I love my China. We entertain a lot, and knew I wanted China. However, I needed and wanted a lot of other things as well. So, I found a beautiful vintage set at Goodwill. With the help of Replacements.com, my mom & I were able to complete my set—I now have a 8 dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowls, cups & saucers as well as the coffee pot and the creamer & sugar bowl ALL for under about $150–the cost of just ONE set brand new.

4. Save the knick-knacks for the gift cards. People want to buy you something fun that they can imagine you using. They would much rather buy you a fancy coffee maker that you’d use every day rather than napkin rings, a soup ladle, can opener, and vegetable peeler.

5. Make a long list! Register for more than you think you will receive. If you register for just a few items and everything gets purchased quickly, you may receive gifts that you don’t necessarily need. If you have a surplus of items on your registry, your guests have much to choose from! The good news–many retailers have programs for purchasing the remainder of your registry after your wedding. For example, Bed, Bath, and Beyond will give you 20% off of the items remaining; Crate & Barrel–10%.
